Questioning the Canon
Solution: The result of this project is an 8-page zine and an exhibition poster on the achievements and accomplishments of Tomoko Miho. Tomoko Miho was a graphic designer at Herman Miller, most well known for her work on the Herman Miller furniture catalogs. Tomoko Miho's work is simple and reminiscent of Swiss Design, so the zine reflects the same minimalism. The poster continues the theme of minimalism by utilizing a grid system paired with a sans-serif font. The image in the background adds texture and a slight structure to the poster.
Objective: Research a designer who is not widely known and design a zine and poster to uplift their achievements. When learning about the history of graphic design, designers from underrepresented groups are often cast aside and overshadowed by the achievements of their peers. To understand the advancement of graphic design, we need to challenge the narrative set by the dominant group and uplift designers with marginalized identities to have a holistic view of graphic design.
